In the shower environment, chlorine can either be in liquid or gas state. At higher water temperatures in the enclosed shower stall, free-chlorine moves from the liquid to the gas state, where it vaporizes and subsequently, inhaled. The science behind shower filtration must take into account the unique situation in the shower, including temperature, flow rate and volume.
Sprite shower filters work on a similar principle to a Catalytic Converter in an automobile. In shower filtration free-chlorine is converted into a harmless chloride. The scientific name for this chemical reaction is known as "Reduction-Oxidation", commonly referred to as Redox.
Redox reactions can be chemically complex. Simply stated, during a Redox reaction electrons are transferred between molecules, creating new elements. For instance, when free-chlorine comes in contact with the filtration media, it is changed into a benign, water-soluble chloride. This reaction changes free-chlorine to a larger chloride element. Too large to evaporate or be absorbed by the skin. It is then carried harmlessly through the water supply.
Redox Filtration Medias
Chlorgon is one type of Redox filtration media. Researched, developed and patented by David Farley, CEO of Sprite Industries, Inc., Chlorgon converts free chlorine and some combined chlorines, such as sodium hypochlorite (liquid swimming pool chlorine), to a harmless chloride. Chlorgon also works well in a variety of temperatures from hot to cold.
Kinetic Degreadation Fluxion, or KDF, is another type of Redox filtration media. Researched, developed and patented by Don Heskett, founder of KDF fluid treatment, KDF converts free chlorine to a harmless chloride. This media of high-purity copper-zinc formulations is used in pre-treatment, primary treatment, and wastewater applications. Patented KDF process media are 100 percent recyclable and contain no chemical additives. Hospitals, restaurants, municipal water treatment facilities, and homes rely on KDF process media to safely reduce or remove free chlorine, iron oxides and hydrogen sulphide.
All Sprite filtered shower products contain both Chlorgon, and KDF filtration medias.
Why KDF® rather than Only Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for shower filters?
GAC is not recommended for hot water use because of the media being continuously exposed to temperatures to 105 degrees F. At these elevated temperatures some of the contaminants adsorbed by the carbon can slough off and re-enter the water (This is why HOT water should never be used with carbon drinking water filters). GAC is highly adsorbent and becomes saturated within just hundreds of gallons versus thousands of gallons with KDF®. Patented KDF process media consist of high-purity copper-zinc formulations. These substances exchange electrons or bond with chlorine and other metals contained in the water to create harmless substances.
Through this basic chemical process known as redox (oxidation/reduction), KDF process media work behind the scenes to rid your water of chlorine, lead, mercury, iron and hydrogen sulphide. The redox reaction also inhibits the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. As an added benefit, KDF media reduce lime scale, mould, and fungi in your tub or shower.
KDF process media are completely safe. KDF media meet EPA and Food and Drug Administration standards for levels of zinc and copper in potable water, so the process is not toxic and does not cause any adverse side effects.
KDF media are environmentally sound and 100% recyclable.
WHY ARE YOUR SHOWER FILTERS SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN OTHER PLACES ?
In order to save our customers money we have chosen to supply the Sprite High Output Shower filters without any fancy packaging. For two reason. Why have all that extra plastic packaging when it really isn’t necessary as most people will only throw it in the bin but admittedly the fancy packaging looks good but we believe that this product is so exceptional that all that fancy expensive wrapping is just not necessary so we prefer to pass on the savings to our customers.
